My name is Randy Townsend, owner of Randy's Turf and                                                              Tree Doctors, Inc. My interest in plant care was evident as early as 10                                                              years old when my parents gave my sister and I two plants to care for. Being the youngest, I                                                              had my choice and selected the homelier of the two. As time went by, my plant became                                                              beautiful and healthy, while my sister's plant ended up, well, dead. This was one of my first                                                              experiences saving plants.

                                                             Later I competed with my grandmother growing African Violets. I grew mine under a                                                           flourescent light and hers were at an east window. We both grew beautiful plants. As a child,                                                       I was also known to grow cactus from seed, help my dad weed-n-feed our lawn, and cut                                                  some of our neighbors lawns.

As I came of age, I was hired in a garden taking care of trees and shrubs outside; while maintaining and selling houseplants, feeds and fertilizers inside the store. High school and vocational school found me studying the greenhouse aspect of horticulture. I  enjoyed a solid two years at LCAVC in the horticulture program, completing two certificates. As my interest in plants grew, I felt comfortable caring for trees. After high school, I worked full time attending college at night, completing an Associates Degree in Science in ornamental horticulture.

In the mid 80's, I worked for Chemlawn Tree and Shrub Care in Glenview, IL. The experience was like being enrolled in a four year college and working at the same time. Four years later, I moved to Mariana Landscape in Lakebluff, IL. As I advanced in the industry, I favored the biological or organic lawn/soil care approach over conventional lawn fertilizers containg salts. After 15 years of work experience and nearly 20 years of continuing education, I started Randy's Turf, Tree and Shrub care in 1992.

Today, helping plants grow remains my passion. When you let us tend to your property, you will have the benefit of over 35 years experience working for you, your turf, and your trees. Our dedicated family business is located in Zion, IL, on the NE side of Lake County. We serve all of Lake and Northern Cook Counties, IL and Kenosha County, WI. We take as much pride in your lawn and trees as we do in our own.
